Ornate, carved gates that are more than an entrance

Székely Gates
more than just an entrance

Symbols of faith, love and togetherness

With the symbols, messages and stories engraved on them, they open doors and give insight into both the historical past and the mystical world. The two columns represent the married couple who intertwined their lives.

The Székely Gates are a type of traditional wooden arched gate built by ethnic group called Székelys, a Hungarian subgroup living mostly in the Transilvania in Romania. Ornate, carved gates that are symbols of faith, love and togetherness. In a spiritual sense, the gates can be divided into three parts. The lower part symbolizes the many creatures of the underworld that want to break in, which also protects families from evil. The central part, with the woven tree of life, shows "my world" where the unfolding tree of life, the tree of God, symbolizes our world of belief. The upper part is the pigeon loft, where the birds, the soul live. The two columns represent the married couple who intertwined their lives. They are believed to tell a lot about the maker, the residents, the belief system, the architecture and Hungarianness.
